EPA Issues Lower Drinking Water Advisories for PFOA/PFOS

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Wednesday, June 15, issued updated drinking water health advisories for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) that replace those EPA issued in 2016. PFOA and PFOS are members of a chemical group called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

These interim, nation-wide advisories will remain in place until EPA establishes a National Primary Drinking Water standard.

The new PFOA and PFOS levels affect many water utilities across NC, including the City of Greensboro's Water Resources Department.

Watch this video of Mike Borchers, director of Greensboro's water resources, explain about:

  • What Health Advisory Levels (HAL) are
  • If the City's drinking water is safe
  • What the City's current PFOA and PFOS average bimonthly sample readings are currently
  • How HALs have changed in the past 12 years
  • What operational changes or considerations the City has already begun planning that will help address the new HALs.
