READING, Pa. - The Kutztown University women's bowling team started the opening day of action just as a host would want to. KU won all five of its matches on the first day of the Golden Bear Classic Friday afternoon at Berks Lanes in Reading. The Golden Bears had their toughest two matches of the day right off the bat, with 15-point wins over Morgan State and Caldwell by scores of 903-888 and 1006-991 respectively. In its third match, Kutztown picked up a 968-826 victory over No. 18 Duquesne, the first win over a ranked opponent for KU since it defeated then No. 18 Wisconsin-Whitewater at the KU Invitational back on Jan. 19. It is the second win over a ranked opponent this calendar year and seventh this season. It is also the first victory over the Dukes this season after losing the first two matches against them earlier in the year. The Maroon and Gold followed that ranked win with two more 100-plus pin victories against Mount Aloysius 906-763 and Coppin State 875-706 in the final two matches of day one.
led the way with a 20.3 frame average, followed by at 18.69, at 18.5 and at 18.02. Kutztown bowled its highest game of 245 in the second match against Caldwell. The Golden Bears are in third place in the standings with an overall of 4,660 total baker points. They sit behind first place St. Francis (4,829) and second place Adelphi (4,765). Kutztown hits the lanes tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 10 beginning with its first match at 9:30 a.m. against LIU Post.
