Parliament, Monday, 08 July 2019 - The chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on COGTA Ms Faith Muthambi welcomed the appointment of the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Commission) by the President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, on 7 June 2019.
The Chairperson, further congratulates Prof Luka Mosoma on his appointment as the Chairperson and Dr Sylvia Pheto on her appointment as the Deputy Chairperson of the CRL Commission as well as all the Commissioners appointed.
The Commissioners have been appointed for a 5-year term and assumed duty on 1 July 2019 until 30 June 2024. The induction of the CRL Commission took place on 4 July 2019.
The mandate of the CRL Commission as enshrined in section 185 of the Constitution, is to promote respect for and strengthen the rights of the cultural, religious and linguistic communities and to assist in the realisation of the rights as contained in the Bill of Rights.
'Parliament will continue to assist and protect the CRL Commission, through legislative and other measures, to ensure the Commission's independence, impartiality, dignity and effectiveness.
We will continue providing support and oversight to the Commission as they continue to protect the rights of the cultural, religious and linguistic communities.
The Presiding Officers would also like to appreciate the previous Commission, which was led by the capable leadership of Ms Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, for working hard in making sure that the Commission works for all South Africans', said Ms Muthambi.
