ICYMI: In Every Major Race, Texas Democrats Finished in First Place on Tuesday

Austin, TX -On Tuesday, Texas Democrats finished in first place in every major contested race across the state of Texas. From Dr. Eliz Markowitz in Texas House District 28 to Lorraine Birabil and James Armstrong in Texas House District 100 to Anna Eastman in House District 148 to Mayor Sylvester Turner in the Houston Mayoral race, Tuesday was a great night for Texas Democrats across the state.

More by the numbers:

  • Dr. Eliz Markowitz bested expectations and six Republicans to finish first with 39.06% of the vote in the bellwether emergency Texas House District 28 special election. Fort Bend County is Tom Delay's old political base and the retiring Republican incumbent won the seat by 8 points last election. Despite that, the changing and diverse district propelled Dr. Markowitz to the top.
  • In Texas House District 100, Democrats received 100% of the vote. We congratulate both Lorraine Birabil and James Armstrong on advancing to the runoff. A Democrat is guaranteed to win the seat.
  • In Texas House District 148, Democrat Anna Eastman finished in first place with nearly 1,000 more votes than her second-place challenger. Democrats won more than 68% of the vote in this district combined.
  • In the Houston Mayoral Race, Democratic Mayor Sylvester Turner finished just under the cutoff to winning outright and nearly twenty points ahead of his Trump Republican challenger.

Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Manny Garcia issued the following statement: 'In elections across the state, Texans voted for Democrats. Our Democratic contenders are in a strong position to win all of these crucial runoff elections. Our work here is just the beginning.

'To protect quality schools, preserve affordable access to healthcare, and create a thriving and diverse Texas economy, we must elect more Texas Democrats. Victory is in our grasp and we won't stop until we seize this moment.'

The Texas Democratic Party will invest heavily in the December 2019 runoff elections to support these races.
