Senator Baldwin visits Schneider in Green Bay to discuss expanding Women in Trucking

GREEN BAY - Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin visited Schneider in Green Bay to discuss initiatives to get more women into the trucking industry. In 2019, Senator Baldwin introduced the Promoting Women in Trucking Workforce Act to support women in the trucking industry, which passed as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

"In Wisconsin, we make things, and we need to ensure we have a strong workforce to transport our goods to market. Together with companies like Schneider, we can create more job opportunities for Wisconsin women to provide more economic security for working families and strengthen our supply chain," said Senator Baldwin. "Women currently make up less than 15 percent of the truck driving workforce, and removing the barriers that get in the way of women pursuing and retaining careers in trucking is key."

"We are extremely proud that the number of women in driver and leadership roles at Schneider has increased across our organization. That is a trend we expect to continue and will work hard to remove obstacles and elevate women in our industry."

Currently, women make up 47 percent of the United States' labor force, yet represent 24 percent of America's trucking workforce and only about 13 percent of drivers. In 2019, Baldwin introduced the Promoting Women in Trucking Workforce Act to support women in the trucking industry and direct the administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to establish a "Women of Trucking Advisory Board." The legislation was passed as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, signed into law last year. The board will identify barriers to entry for women in the trucking industry, work across organizations and companies to coordinate formal education and training programs and help identify and establish training and mentorship programs for women in the industry.
