Overnight stays in Alentejo and RA Madeira exceeded the levels of October 2019

Summary

The tourist accommodation sector registered 2.1 million guests and 5.5 million overnight stays in October 2021, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of +115.5% and +139.0%, respectively (+52.3% and +58.5% in September, in the same order). The levels reached in October 2021 were lower than those observed in October 2019, having decreased the number of guests and overnight stays by 14.6% and 13.5%, respectively.

In October, the domestic market contributed with 2.0 million overnight stays and increased by 65.4%, continuing to exceed the levels of the same period of 2019 (+28.2%). Overnight stays from non-residents totalled 3.5 million, the highest value since October 2019, having tripled compared to October 2020 (+216.6%) but decreased 26.7% compared to October 2019.

In October, there were increases in overnight stays in all regions. Compared to October 2019, the growth recorded in Alentejo (+14.9%) and RA Madeira (+3.9%) stood out, while the other regions registered decreases.

Overnight stays recorded in the first ten months of 2021 increased by 31.0% (+31.9% for residents and +30.0% for non-residents). Compared to the same period of 2019, overnight stays decreased by 49.9% (-11.0% for residents and -66.3% for non-residents).

In October, 24.2% of the tourist accommodation establishments were closed or had no movement of guests (20.5% in September).
