Local Students to Get Dose of Health Care Experience with Moffitt Healthy KIDZ
WHO: Moffitt Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida, will host middle and high school students from the B.E.S.T. (Brain Expansions Scholastic Training) Program for a Moffitt Healthy KIDZ assembly. The B.E.S.T. Program was founded by internist/pediatrician Dexter Frederick.
WHAT: The Moffitt Healthy KIDZ Program offers innovative health education for students from elementary school to college guided by the philosophy that prevention starts early. Moffitt Healthy KIDZ teaches students about the importance of healthy nutrition, exercise and the dangers of smoking.
'These students are youth who are eagerly pursuing a career in health care and use a portion of their summer to advance their knowledge and get a head start,' said Nikki Ross-Inda, community relations coordinator at Moffitt.
B.E.S.T. Program students will experience STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) careers firsthand with Moffitt Healthy KIDZ. Speakers will not only share their expertise, but also why they chose a career in medicine, specifically in oncology.
The program will also feature a winner of the Healthy KIDZ STEAM Role Model Award. Sarah Jennewein was unable to attend the June 9 event. She will be honored and presented a $1,000 scholarship to help support her as she begins her freshmen year at Dartmouth College this fall.
