Walsh College Announces Everett Hawley Jr. Tax Award Winners

TROY, Mich., July 16, 2021 - Walsh College has announced 2021 recipients of the Everett Hawley Jr. Tax Award, Crystal Jahn and James Sovinsky. Named for the former chair of Walsh's board of trustees, the Hawley Award promotes excellence in the study of taxation and annually honors graduate taxation students for outstanding academic achievement. Jahn and Sovinsky will be honored at the Mark J. Solomon Tax Symposium in November along with 2020 Hawley Award recipients Angela Crawley, Jamie Martin and Virginia Zielinski.

'The Everett Hawley Jr. Tax Award recipients represent the best of our taxation students. These students were consistently prepared and ready to contribute to every class which they attended. We know these individuals have bright futures ahead of them as valued tax professionals,' said Richard Davidson, CPA, JD, LL.M., chair and associate professor of taxation at Walsh.

Walsh also announced two new awards honoring high achieving tax students: the Mark J. Solomon Capstone Award and the Lee A. Sartori Tax Research and Writing Award. The Mark J. Solomon Capstone award, named for the late professor Mark Solomon who oversaw and maintained Walsh's prestigious taxation program and renowned tax library for more than 30 years, honors a graduate tax student whose work in the Master of Science in Taxation capstone class demonstrates outstanding effort, original thought, and technical excellence. The Lee A. Sartori Tax Research and Writing Award, named for adjunct professor Lee Sartori, recognizes a student whose performance in the tax research class represents the highest standards of technical competence and creativity in research and writing. The first winners of these awards will be determined during the upcoming 2021-2022 academic year.

Walsh's Master of Science in Taxation is the college's longest running graduate program and rated a top national program by Best Value Schools and Grad School Hub.
