City’s Outreach and Engagement Center played key role in providing weather respite this past winter

The City of Sacramento's Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC) played a key role in providing weather respite to unsheltered residents this past winter, according to data provided by the Department of Community Response.

Between November 2023 and March 2024, the OEC (3615 Auburn Blvd.) was activated for weather respite 69 times, providing 2,599 bed nights to unsheltered residents. Throughout these 69 days of activation, the OEC accommodated an average of 37 people per night.

The OEC serves individuals and families experiencing homelessness and others primarily in District 2. During weather respite activations, it can serve an additional 50 guests who need a safe space without incurring extra costs to the City.

"The City's monitoring of weather forecasts ensures that respite center operations are activated promptly, demonstrating our commitment to protecting the health and safety of all our residents," said Brian Pedro, director of the City's Department of Community Response. "The OEC's impact extends beyond providing a safe and stable environment; it serves as a critical gateway to essential connections and services for people experiencing homelessness."

The County of Sacramento also regularly activated weather respite centers during the cold and wet season. These included the Department of Human Assistance building on 28th Street, the North A Shelter, and the Warren E. Thornton Youth Center Gym.

Sacramento Regional Transitworked closely with the City and County during the winter season, providing free transportation to and from respite centers.

The City of Sacramento will continuously monitor the National Weather Service's forecast and activate weather-respite operations as needed, Pedro said.

The OEC has been instrumental in providing safe respite and daytime services to unsheltered residents and others, particularly during the winter and summer months. For more information on the City's weather-respite activation criteria, click here.
