The National Law Enforcement Conference is a collegiate body that is part of the national public security system. It develops and monitors strategies, actions, and policies to combat and investigate crime and to provide legal security in Mexico.
Arms trafficking and the violence it creates are closely related to these tasks, which is why the CNPJ issued a statement expressing its support for the Mexican government's civil lawsuit against U.S. gun companies.
In the statement, the CNPJ recognizes the role played by gun companies in promoting arms trafficking to Mexico with their negligent and illicit business practices. The Conference also states that illicit arms trafficking is the main source of supply for criminal organizations in Mexico.
It mentions actions that law enforcement institutions have taken, in addition to federal initiatives, to combat arms trafficking, such as the Criminal Firearms Registry, used to trace guns in investigations and the use of forensic studies for gunshot detection and ballistic fingerprints.
The CNPJ statement is evidence of the importance given by the Mexican government to combating arms trafficking at all levels and in all areas by using all the tools at its disposal. Reducing the supply of guns, and therefore the firepower of criminal groups, is a key strategy for advancing peace and security in the country.
The statement of the CNPJ comes in addition to the many public expressions of support for the Mexican government's legal actions and the friends of the court briefs presented by academics, state attorneys general and district attorneys in the United States, governments of Latin America and the Caribbean, and civil society groups in Europe and Mexico.
