All about Wholesome Honey: The Sweet Nectar that Benefits Brazilian Communities

Whether a sweetener for tea, a topping for toast or an ingredient for baked goods, we all know and love honey for its satisfying taste and natural qualities. Revered by cultures around the world throughout history, honey has been called a 'food of the gods,' and given all the factors it takes to create honey - honeybees, flowering plants, and a humming hive, it's no doubt why honey is so special. While this process is amazing, many factors can impact the quality of honey - geographic location, pesticides and more, and understanding what to look for when selecting honey will help you choose the best for your family's table.

Wholesome works directly with beekeepers to source USDA Certified Organic honey from some of the most pristine, untouched areas of the world in the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil. Deep within the rainforest and Caatinga Biome regions, our beekeepers and their hives are located miles away from civilization and industrialized agriculture. This means that unlike much 'local' honey across the US, the flora and honeybees that habituate these regions are not exposed to chemical pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms. Additionally, as the bees in these areas are Africanized bees, they are more resistant to disease, so the hives are not treated with antibiotics or other veterinary drugs. In turn, our bees freely forage on native wild flowers to produce delicious, organic honey free from pesticides and other environmental contaminants, and the natural ecosystems of these biodiverse regions remain lush and protected by beekeepers.

Our bees are exposed to a variety of flowering trees and plants throughout the year, providing a rich, multi-floral taste to our honeys that bring 100% pure and natural (never adulterated), satisfying sweetness to your favorite foods and beverages. Like wine, chocolate or coffee, honey has an amazing ability to showcase terroir, or 'taste of place' - the flavor that represents the region in which it was grown and cultivated, and is influenced by geography, climate and more. In the case of Wholesome Organic Honey, our taste reflects the diverse abundance of flowering Brazilian plants, and offers a light butterscotch flavor that pairs well with warm biscuits, hard cheese, Greek yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, tea, coffee and more. In fact, we have some of the best honey in the world as voted on at the 2013 World Beekeeping Awards by International Congress of Apiculture.

While we certainly take pride in the fact our honey is organic and offers delicious, multi-floral flavor, one of the things we're most proud of is the fact that all of our honey is Fair Trade Certified. If you want to learn more about our Fair Trade honey process, check out this blog post.

There are many types of honey on the market today, but knowing the impact on people and planet choosing organic, Fair Trade honey makes gives you the power to make the best decision for yourself and your family.
