City Announces Additional Fourth of July Weekend Road Closure for Martin Luther King Drive

PHILADELPHIA - The City announced today that Martin Luther King (MLK) Drive will be closed to vehicular traffic for the Fourth of July weekend beginning on Saturday, July 2 at 5 a.m. through Tuesday, July 5 at 5 a.m. This is in addition to the road closures for Wawa Welcome America festivities previously announced.

As part of the City's commitment to users of the trail, the closure is part of a series of pilot extended closures to increase recreational access for the public.

  • Pedestrian and bike access to MLK Drive on July 4th will be allowed at the MLK Bridge along the Schuylkill River Trail but viewing Welcome America activities from the bridge itself will be restricted.
  • Vehicular access throughout the weekend will be limited to pre-arranged rowing activities.

The road closure will help create a safer experience for walkers, joggers, and cyclists to enjoy the trail recreationally and view fireworks over the holiday weekend. The City encourages those interested in participating in the weekend festivities to enjoy this opportunity responsibly.
