The NNSA Graduate Fellowship Program (NGFP) is a unique opportunity for recent graduates to join the Nuclear Security Enterprise. These full-time, salaried positions offer a year of specialized, on-the-job training and the chance to tackle real-world challenges in one of NNSA's program offices. Fellows develop technical and leadership skills to launch their careers with a full immersion in one of NNSA's core mission programs.
What is your academic background/field of study?
I earned a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Oregon State University, and a B.S. in Chemistry from University of California, Davis. Throughout my graduate program I performed fundamental research on inorganic oxides, including the discovery of new materials and the characterization of their structure and properties for potential use as dielectrics, pigments, and topological insulators.
What are you currently doing for NNSA?
I am currently working in the office of Technology Maturation within Defense Programs, aiding in program management activities. I have the privilege of leading the organizational team for a department-wide workshop focused on additive manufacturing to facilitate communication across both sites and programs to unite their vision.
What has surprised you about the fellowship program?
This is an incredibly unique experience in which you are not only making a contribution to the office in which you work, but you are also being offered an opportunity for an incredible amount of professional growth. The amount of time and effort invested in NGFP fellows is unlike anything I've seen before. I've been able to attend seminars, conferences, technology shows, and briefings - growing my knowledge base and making me more effective within the NNSA mission.
What advice would you give prospective fellows?
The NGFP program offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the NNSA, whose mission is critically important to national security. You will be a part of an amazing team of passionate individuals seeking to protect our country. In many ways this program is what you make of it, so be proactive. Pursue personal growth opportunities and reach for the things you want to achieve.
