McEachin Statement on Gun Violence in America

McEachin Urges Senate Action on Gun Reform Legislation

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) issued the following statement in the wake of several tragic mass shootings, including in Buffalo, Laguna Woods, Milwaukee, and Houston:

"Gun violence is a public health crisis in our nation that requires immediate action. As our country reels from the aftermath of several recent shootings, the pressing need to advance gun reform legislation becomes more apparent. Since the start of 2022 - a mere 21 weeks - the United States has already seen over 200 mass shootings.

"We are past the point of offering our thoughts, prayers, and condolences. The American people deserve to live in a country free from the fear of mass shootings and other horrific acts of domestic terrorism. Our children deserve better than a nation plagued by gun violence. Yet, members of the Republican party continue to drag their feet on commonsense gun reform legislation while spewing hateful, vitriolic rhetoric and promoting blatantly inaccurate and divisive conspiracies, like the 'great replacement theory.'

"We will only be able to form a more perfect Union when the health, safety, and well-being of all Americans - regardless of their skin color or socioeconomic status - is protected and prioritized. That is not possible without advancing smart, practical legislation to curb the rampant epidemic of gun violence in our nation. I urge the Senate to take up a vote on the several pieces of gun reform legislation that have passed out of the House and are currently stalled and awaiting action.

"Americans' lives hang in the balance. We cannot afford further inaction."
