Women's Basketball Fends Off Late Gwynedd Rally to Claim Battle of 309

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - double-double with a season-high 25 points vaulted the Arcadia University women's basketball team to a wire-to-wire, 90-88 victory over Gwynedd Mercy in the 2019 edition of the Battle of Route 309 Tuesday night. The win marks the Knights' second all-time in the series that began in 2015 and first on the road.

Three Knights finished the night in double-figures, as and went for 23 and 22 points, respectively. Dunn's scoring total was her third-straight games in double-figures, while Makowski narrowly missed out on a triple-double with eight assists to go along with her 25 points and 12 boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Griffins raced out to an eight-point lead just over four minutes into the first quarter, but a 10-3 run powered by Makowski and Dunn vaulted the Knights to their first lead since the 6:57 mark of the opening period. A Gwynedd three at the buzzer put the hosts ahead, 20-17, at the end of one.

-The two sides combined for 51 points in a high-scoring second quarter. jumper with two minutes remaining in the half sparked a 9-2 run to the end of the second quarter as Makowski netted five of the nine to send the Knights to the half up, 48-40.

-The Knights took their largest lead of the night at ten in the opening minutes of the second half, and despite a Gwynedd rally to get within three at the halfway point of the third quarter, Daveski and Makowski powered Arcadia back to a ten-point advantage heading into the fourth.

-The Griffins started the fourth on a 9-0 run to cut the Arcadia lead to one, but an ensuing 8-0 Knight run powered by a pair of points each from Cyr, Dunn, Daveski and Makowski gave Arcadia a 76-67 advantage. Gwynedd was able to stage a rally to get within one with 22 seconds left in regulation, but the Knights never relinquished the lead as Cyr went 3-for-4 from the line in the final seconds before a potential game-winning Griffin three at the buzzer fell off the mark.

-The Knights shot 49.2 percent (30-61) from the field on the night, including an even 50 percent (16-32) in the first half.
-Arcadia shot 81.3 percent (26-32) from the free throw line.
-The Knights caused 19 Griffins turnovers in the contest and scored ten points off those opportunities.
-Arcadia scored 44 of its 90 points in the paint and 21 on fast break opportunities.
