Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme Partnership announced

News: 5 July 2022

MFAT Deputy Secretary - Pacific and Development Group, Andrew Needs, and Education New Zealand Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, today announced a new partnership between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and Education New Zealand (ENZ) that will see ENZ take over operational management of MFAT's Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme (MNZSP) from November 2022.

"This partnership plays to both the MFAT and ENZ's strengths," said Andrew Needs.

"It will help us ensure that not only are we demonstrating manaaki to our scholars, but also offering scholarships that address the skills and knowledge requirements of each of our developing country partners."

The MNZSP is a key pillar of Aotearoa New Zealand's International Development Cooperation (formerly New Zealand Aid), offering over 1,100 scholarships annually to students from 112 countries to study in Aotearoa New Zealand, in the Pacific, or online.

"This is an excellent example of 'NZ Inc.' cooperation in action, and both MFAT and ENZ are looking forward to an enduring, multi-decade, relationship," said Grant McPherson.

ENZ will deliver the operational management of all schemes, leveraging its expertise in delivering a world-class scholar experience, and its data and insights capabilities. ENZ already manages the Prime Minister's Scholarships for Asia and Latin America as well as scholarships on behalf of the Ministries of Business, Innovation and Employment and Primary Industries. Since its inception more than 2,400 Kiwi students have undertaken a Prime Minister's Scholarship to Asia or Latin America.

MFAT will retain strategic direction setting and will continue to fund the MNZSP. Once scholars become alumni, they will benefit from MFAT's recently launched alumni programme.
