Investigation update: bank robbery and officer-involved shooting

The East County Major Crime Team (MCT) continues to investigate the bank robbery and officer-involved shooting that occurred on Jan. 4 in Gresham.

The involved officers are identified as Gresham Police Officer Mark Smith and Multnomah County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Phifer.

Officer Mark Smith has 31 years of total full-time law enforcement experience and is a 15-year veteran of the Gresham Police Department. Deputy Phifer is a 22-year veteran in law enforcement and has been employed with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office and Portland Police Bureau (PPB) during his career. Deputy Phifer's returned to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office last year after serving with PPB for 14 years.

The deputy and officer were placed on paid critical incident leave as standard protocol for both agencies in deadly force incidents.

The investigation is ongoing, and no further information will be released at this time.
