Man charged after firearms seized - Batemans Bay

A man has been charged with firearm and driving offences following a vehicle stop on the South Coast yesterday.

About 10.30pm (Friday 13 May 2022), officers from South Coast Police District stopped an unregistered Holden Commodore on the Princes Highway, North Batemans Bay.

Police spoke to the driver - a 40-year-old man - and inquiries revealed he was disqualified from driving.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers seized a crossbow, a black suitcase containing one

shortened .22 rifle, a shortened 12-gauge shotgun and one shortened smaller gauge shotgun, along with

ammunition suited to all three firearms.

The driver was arrested and taken to Batemans Bay Police Station where he was charged with the following offences:

  • Use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road
  • Use prohibited weapon contrary to prohibition order
  • Possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority (x3)
  • Possess unregistered firearm - prohibited firearm (x3)
  • Firearm etc found at premises - subject to prohibition order (x3)
  • Possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority
  • Use uninsured motor vehicle
  • Use vehicle on road or road related area motor vehicle tax not paid
  • Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period

The Batemans Bay man was refused bail to appear before Wollongong Local Court today (Saturday 14 May 2022).
