Denver Reopens 8th Avenue Bridge over the South Platte River

Published on May 14, 2022

Denver -Denver's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is excited to announce it has reopened West 8thAvenue over the South Platte River after closing the stretch last September so that crews could replace a decades old bridge in the Sun Valley and Lincoln Park neighborhoods between Zuni Street and Federal Boulevard. The new bridge at the same location is wider, better and safer for travel, offering a second eastbound travel lane for people in cars and 10-foot-wide sidewalks that are more comfortable for people who walk and bike.

Funding to replace the 92-year-old structure came from the voter-approvedElevate Denver BondProgram. The bridge was refurbished once in the 1960's; the new structure will serve the community for decades to come.

The South Platte River Trail that runs underneath the 8thAvenue bridge is also open for walking and biking, with one ramp connection to W. 8thAvenue complete and the other due to be complete in the next week or two.

Crews will be on site for a few more weeks cleaning up and doing final touches and may need to close a travel lane on occasion as they are completing the work.
