WASHINGTON, DC - China Task Force Chairman Michael McCaul released a statement on the Women's Tennis Association's (WTA) announcement of plans to suspend all WTA tournaments in China. This decision comes following the suspicious disappearance of PRC tennis player Peng Shuai after she accused a former top CCP official of sexual assault. Peng's claims were later refuted by PRC state media using apparently false statements from Peng. She has only been seen since in circumstances that indicate that she is not free from CCP intimidation and control.
"I commend the Board of the Women's Tennis Association for an inspiring display of moral clarity and support for democratic values. Unfortunately, this is all too rare among those with financial ties to the PRC and the CCP's totalitarian abuses. I urge other sporting associations, especially those with athletes that compete in the Olympics, to join the WTA in this stand against injustice."
