Estonian experts to join EU civilian missions in Ukraine and Somalia

In September, Estonian experts Ernst-Armin Tõnisson and Karin Anna Maandi will join the civilian mission of the European Union in Ukraine. Estonia will also post its first expert, Rainer Koor, to the EU mission in Somalia.

The EUAM Ukraine mission focuses on the reform of Ukraine's civilian security sector. This involves supervising and advising the relevant Ukrainian agencies in developing and implementing updated security strategies. Estonia has been part of the mission since its inception. The aim of the EUCAP Somalia mission is to reinforce Somalia's maritime civilian law enforcement capability. This includes assisting the authorities of Somalia in drafting necessary legal norms and reinforcing the maritime criminal justice system.

Estonia is posting experts to international civilian missions to help prevent and manage international conflicts in our immediate neighbourhood and beyond. Estonia prioritises wide-ranging participation in the prevention and management of international conflicts and peace building. Taking part in civilian missions directly contributes to Estonia's security.

Estonian experts are posted to European Union missions in Ukraine, Georgia, Mali and Somalia, as well as to the UN mission in Kosovo and the OSCE mission in Ukraine. A total of 12 experts posted by Estonia are currently working with various international civilian missions. The civilian missions are coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
