Flossmoor Again Named Tree City USA

  • Dedicating an annual community forestry budget of at least $2/capita
  • Hosting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation

"Tree City USA communities see the positive effects of an urban forest firsthand," said Dan Lambe, Chief Executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "The trees being planted and cared for by Flossmoor are ensuring that generation to come will enjoy a better quality of life. Additionally, participation in this program brings residents together and creates a sense of civic pride, whether it's through volunteer engagement or public education."

For many years, Flossmoor has been promoting the growth and care of trees in the Village, plus it actively encourages tree plantings. Two Village-sponsored tree planting events were held in 2023 with participation from the Flossmoor Public Works Department, Flossmoor Green Commission and dedicated community volunteers. Flossmoor was a Governor's Hometown Award finalist in 2023. A group of Flossmoor representatives went to the 2023 State Fair in August to give a presentation about the community-wide Hidden Gem Tree planting event, which was held in October 2022, and involved the planting of 300 trees in one day. The Village also held its first annual tree walk in 2023. Approximately 40 residents came out to the educational tree walk, given by the Village's Forestry Maintenance Technician David Becker. During the walk, participants learned about Flossmoor's tree diversity, tree management and the benefits of trees.

"The Flossmoor Public Works Department is proud of the community's ability to work together to make a positive impact on Flossmoor's urban forest that will last for generations," said Becker. "Flossmoor's past and future efforts will continue to build a resilient urban forest, while continuing to build a strong community."

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. More information about the program is available at www.arborday.org/TreeCityUSA.
