Helicopter-supported geologic mapping July 14-30

Scientists from the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) and the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) will be in Haines July 14-30 conducting helicopter-supported geologic mapping and sampling to help understand landslide hazards affecting the borough. UAF Professor Margaret Darrow and her team will work along the road system for the first week to collect field data to document the Beach Road landslide and other slope failures that occurred during the December 2020 storm event. DGGS will assist that work and then shift focus to conducting borough-wide reconnaissance geologic mapping and sampling in preparation for a major field project planned for summer 2023. A helicopter will be in use July 23-30 to support this work.
