The City’s Department of Utilities is hiring. Here’s how to apply

The City's Department of Utilities is looking for people to fill many roles in the organization, which provides drinking water, stormwater and wastewater services to residents and business in the city of Sacramento.

The department offers many types of positions for many kinds of people, according to Carlos Eliason, Utilities spokesperson.

"People who like to work with their hands, people who like to work with people - there are so many opportunities in the Department of Utilities," Eliason said. "Our work is diverse because we do so much. Everything from flood management services, helping people save water, to educating them about stormwater quality and the importance of our environment."

While some DOU positions require experience, others are entry level. Here are the positions that are currently open:

Utilities Operations and Maintenance Service Worker

A utilities operations and maintenance service worker in the Wastewater & Drainage Division supports the collection and maintenance of both infrastructure systems.

  • Compensation: $65,127.58 - $91,641.04 annually
  • Applications due April 26

Supervising Plant Operator

The supervising plant operator is a supervisor-level position that documents, organizes, and directs staff in the plant operator series.

  • Compensation: $99,804.78 - $140,435.35 annually
  • Applications due May 12

Water Conservation Representative

The Department of Utilities has three water conservation representatives that are assigned to different areas of the City and handle incoming service requests for customer leak investigation or water waste concern.

  • Compensation: $44,054.14 - $61,988.61 Annually
  • Applications due May 5

Water Quality Chemist

The primary responsibility of water quality chemists in Water Quality Laboratory and Research and Development sections is the testing and analysis of City drinking water to help ensure protection of public health.

  • Compensation: $74,695.98 - $105,104.74 annually

Administrative Analyst

The administrative analyst position in the Environmental and Regulatory section manages public education and outreach campaigns on topics such as stormwater pollution prevention, wastewater systems, source water protection and flood awareness for the Sacramento region.

  • Compensation: $78,883.09 - $103,501.46 annually
  • Applications due April 25

Administrative Technician

The administrative technician will work closely with other staff to support the department's safety program.

  • Compensation: $60,448.68 - $79,313.91 Annually
  • Applications due May 3

The Department of Utilities employs more than 500 people, Eliason said.

Some positions, such as service workers, often have many opportunities to be filled during the year.

"Make sure to check our position postings frequently as more positions open up all the time," Eliason said.
