Rep. Frankel Statement on House Passage of Major Policing Reform and Equal Justice Legislation

Today, Rep. Lois Frankel (FL-21) issued the following statement after the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act passed the House by a vote of 220-212.

'I'm proud to have cast a vote for the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This legislation encompassesbold, unprecedented reforms to curb police misconduct, end racial profiling, and hold police accountable,' said Rep. Frankel. 'Last summer, our nation witnessed a moment of incredible anguish after the murder of George Floyd-a moment that led Americans from all walks of life to say enough is enough, and call for major changes to our justice system. This bill will boost good policing and save lives. I urge the U.S. Senate to take up and pass these needed reforms immediately.'

Specifically, the legislation:

  • Bans chokeholds;
  • Stops no-knock warrants;
  • Ends the qualified immunity doctrine that is a barrier to holding police officers accountable for wrongful conduct;
  • Combats racial profiling;
  • Mandates data collection,
  • Requires body cameras for federal officers;
  • Invests in community-based public safety programs; and,
  • Establishes new standards for policing.

This bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
