Wisconsin Receives Grant to Expand Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery

October 4, 2022

WASHINGTON - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) announced today that the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program (VCGP), which it oversees, has awarded a grant of up to $3,293,695 to the state of Wisconsin for the expansion of Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove.

"This cemetery is the fourth busiest state Veterans cemetery in the nation averaging more than 1300 burials annually," said Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Matthew Quinn. "It is clear to see supporting this cemetery's expansion is critical to serving Veteran populations located in or near three metropolitan areas."

Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery currently serves more than 156,000 Veterans and their eligible family members living within 75 miles of the cemetery. The grant will fund 3500 columbarium niches, landscaping, and supporting infrastructure on approximately 2 acres of land.

Since its inception in 1978, the VCGP has provided more than $959 million to establish, expand, improve, operate and maintain 121 cemeteries in which Veterans are currently interred. In fiscal year 2021, these cemeteries conducted more than 45,000 burials.
