Weekend construction to close two stations on Blue and Silver lines

For immediate release: April 30, 2024

Free shuttle buses replace trains between Addison Rd and Downtown Largo, single tracking Red and Green lines

This weekend, May 4 and May 5, two stations on the Blue and Silver lines will be closed for improvements. Free shuttle buses will replace trains at Downtown Largo and Morgan Boulevard, providing connections to the rail system to/from Addison Rd. Additional maintenance and repair work is also scheduled on the Red and Green lines.

Metro will continue to provide frequent service across most of the system, with trains running normal or near normal service to about 80% of the 98 stations systemwide.

On the Blue and Silver lines, radio and fiber-optic cable are being installed as part of Metro's long-term project to upgrade communications systems under the Capital Improvement Program. The work will enable improved cellular service and two-way communications for customers and the Metro Transit Police Department, as well as future technology upgrades to train communications systems.

On the Red Line, trains will single track between Van Ness and Friendship Heights for tunnel leak mitigation, sealing up any water leaks within the work zone. On the Green Line, between Naylor Road and Branch Avenue, crews will replace the wooden rail ties that support the tracks, replace fasteners which affix the rails to the wooden ties, install new insulators, and perform tamping to pack the stone beneath the tracks that provides stability.
