"The launch on the first International Day to Counter Hate Speech of Article 19's reports on content moderation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia and Kenya is a significant contribution of the UNESCO 'Social Media 4 Peace' project to curb hate speech on social media while protecting freedom of expression. These reports provide concrete recommendations and call for creating local coalitions on freedom of expression and content moderation to bridge the gap between Internet companies and civil society organizations at the national level, thereby ensuring localization and contextualization of content moderation decisions," said Tawfik Jelassi, UNESCO Assistant Director General for Communication and Information. To celebrate the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, ARTICLE 19(link is external)- UNESCO's partner in the project Social Media 4 Peace - released on 16 June 2022 three research reports investigating how harmful content is moderated on major social media platforms in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia and Kenya, the three beneficiary countries of the project funded by the European Union.
