XPO LTL Growth in Spain

XPO Logistics, a leading provider of freight transportation services, achieved a significant benchmark in the growth of its less-than-truckload (LTL) business by delivering nearly 5.1 million pallets in 2021, a 10% increase from 2020.
XPO's LTL business has a highly diversified customer portfolio. 26% of its volume of pallets delivered by sector is linked to omnichannel retail and 17% is from food and beverage. Energy and chemicals and industrial and construction account for 14% each. The consumer and automation and electronics sectors also have an important weight in the volume of pallets transported.
Massimo Marsili, managing director - Southern Europe and Morocco, XPO Logistics, said: "Freight transport has shown great flexibility and resilience in recent years. The LTL segment, which we've been leading for years in Spain, has shown remarkable growth in the number of pallets transported. It's clearly positioned as a strategic and essential business line for XPO. We're confident this trend will continue throughout 2022 thanks to the adoption of e-commerce and the consolidation of the recovery of consumption and the productive fabric."
XPO's extensive integrated LTL network in Spain has 67 distribution sites, with a total of 987 loading docks and 224,000 square metres of floor space, as well as a fleet of almost 500 trucks and 900 delivery vehicles dedicated to LTL service. During 2020 and 2021, with the purpose of offering better service and more flexibility to its customers, XPO's network in Spain has grown by 226 docks thanks to the opening of eight new sites in Benavente (Zamora), Castellbisbal (Barcelona), Heras (Cantabria), Irún (Guipúzcoa), Lugo, San Fernando de Henares (Madrid), Valencia and Vitoria.
In the coming months, the company plans to reinforce its capillarity in the Iberian Peninsula with the opening of new facilities or the expansion and modernisation of existing ones. XPO is finalising the opening of a new distribution site in Galicia and plans to open new facilities in Spain during the second half of 2022.
The company is driving its growth through its last mile services on bulky goods, daytime pallet deliveries and night deliveries, where it has a network of 5,500 night delivery points in Spain. XPO is also focusing on deliveries to large supermarkets, the expansion of its global forwarding business and the promotion of intermodal solutions.
