The Gold Coast is poised to become Asia Pacific's preferred superyacht hub, with a $65,000 simulation project completed as Australia's largest marina berth prepares to open.
The City, in collaboration with Queensland Government and Southport Yacht Club, have completed a Superyacht Simulation Report allowing vessels up to 130m to enter the Broadwater.
"The Gold Coast's yachting industry is having a coming-of-age as we continue to expand facilities and infrastructure to meet a remarkable increase in demand," said Mayor Tom Tate.
"The report has been created to put the finishing touches on our superyacht hub and will create a safe and easy path for some of the world's biggest superyachts."
The simulation carried out for the Southport Yacht Club is part of a strategy to attract larger superyachts into the Broadwater. Currently, the largest vessel able to enter are around 75m.
It will ensure the safety of larger superyachts travelling through the Broadwater to the club berth by modelling the manoeuvring of larger vessels under all environmental conditions.
This project complements the work being carried out to create the largest dedicated marine
precinct in the southern hemisphere.
Superyacht interest has grown on the Gold Coast with the introduction of a dedicated customs port of entry at Southport Yacht Club, construction of a mega superyacht berth and dredging to improve access to the Gold Coast Marine Precinct.
The superyacht strategy includes a $300 million expansion of the Coomera Marine Precinct, to provide a one-stop-shop for berthing, maintenance, service and fit out.
According to Superyacht Australia, the Gold Coast received an estimated $36.5 million from 23 superyacht vessels in 2020. This equates to just under half of the Queensland total and 36 percent of Australia's total.
