Learn about the City’s LGBTQ+ Historic Experience Project at this April 18 meeting

The City of Sacramento's Historic Preservation team is launching the "LGBTQ+ Historic Experience Project" and is asking the public to get involved. The first public meeting for the project is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, April 18 at First United Methodist Church, (2100 J St.).

City staff will give a brief presentation to provide information about the project and how the public can help. The presentation will be followed by a discussion and listening session where attendees can ask questions, make suggestions and share their stories.

The project will include extensive research, oral history interviews, community outreach, and workshops which will help in drafting a historic context statement and identifying potential historic sites that currently go unrecognized.

"This project is an exciting opportunity to recognize and highlight the LGBTQ+ community's contributions in the City of Sacramento going back generations," said Henry Feuss, an assistant planner in the City's Historic Preservation. "We hope community members can help tell their own story and most importantly, help us make sure we are capturing their lived experience accurately."

City staff, volunteers from partner organizations, and the City's historic consultant will work collaboratively to gather material about the LGBTQ+ historic experience in Sacramento.

Community members are being asked to submit copies of photos, newspaper clippings, flyers, and other relevant records to assist with the research effort. Community members are also being asked to record conversations and stories with their elders and submit those as part of the project.

Documents and oral history interview recordings will help create an archive of the LGBTQ+ historic experience for future researchers and be housed at the Center for Sacramento History.

The project is funded by the City and the Historic Preservation Fund, administered through the Certified Local Government Program and the California State Office of Historic Preservation. The project will be managed by City staff with support from community partners.

Those interested in participating, can visit the LGBTQ+ Historic Experience Project webpage to learn how to submit information and to be a part of the oral history component of the project. Email the project team directly at [email protected].
