Learn How to Prepare For the Growing Season, Protect Ecosystems and Conserve Resources with the City’s New “Think Green This Spring” Initiative

DES MOINES, IOWA - Thursday, April 25, 2024 - Warmer temperatures this spring have accelerated the long-awaited growing season and Des Moines is blooming. As residents prepare for planting on their properties, it's the ideal time to learn how projects and simple actions can promote biodiversity and preserve the local environment.

As a way to simplify the search for local educational resources, the City of Des has introduced "Think Green This Spring," a new sustainability initiative aimed at helping everyone from homeowners, to renters, to business owners tap into a broad network of resources available in the community. This initiative is intended to create a collaboration using best practices and hands-on opportunities to conserve natural resources and assist emerging ecosystems.

To connect residents to a collection of City programs, resources and events, the new "Think Green This Spring" digital guide links to methods from Des Moines' sustainability plan, ADAPT DSM, as well as the Parks and Recreation Department and the Public Works Department's Forestry Division. The guide connects residents with proven strategies to nurture emerging pollinator habitats, expand the tree canopy, plant native grasses and flowers, build rain gardens, restore soil, grow urban food supplies and more.

"We want to help educate residents on a wide variety of City environmental programs, as well as point everyone to established resources and proven best practices that will help promote a sustainability mindset as they prepare their yards for the growing season," said Mayor Connie Boesen.

A number of late April and May events are included in the digital guide to provide information about community gardening, learn about Monarch butterflies, share perennials, select native plants, pick up tiny trees and visit with ADAPT DSM staff:
