Halfway through their 2024 campaign, the Boston University women's lacrosse Terriers have battled to a 4-4 record ahead of their home Patriot League debut at Nickerson Field Wednesday when they will host Army West Point (3-6).

Two years removed from their worst season in program history (2-15, 1-8 PL), the Terriers are excited to begin conference play at home. Head coach Lauren Morton (CAS'08) says consistency will be key this year. "We've definitely been a group that's just continuing to grow," Morton says. "I think that continuing to play four quarters has been our biggest struggle, but I think that we're learning and certainly aware of it. I've been really impressed with this group and their buy-in and willingness to keep working hard."

The Terriers began the season hot, jumping out to a 4-0 start. They have since dropped four straight, including losses to three ranked opponents-No. 3 BC, No. 25 Brown, and No. 18 Navy. Terriers defenseman Ellen Monahan (Questrom'24) views their .500 record as a fresh start ahead of the home opener.

"I think where we're at right now presents us with a really great opportunity. We've had a string of four tough games, but we're definitely not discouraged," Monahan says. "I think we're a gritty, scrappy team that can kind of battle through this adversity. It's cool that we're four-and-four and it's exactly halfway through our season-we're treating it like 0-0, like this is kind of a fresh start."

This year's marks Monahan's fourth season with the team, which finished 9-9 (4-5 PL) last season. She is hopeful that this could be her first winning season with the Scarlet and White.

"We're definitely a grittier group than we've had in years past," she says. "We are willing to dig in and do the dirty work, being hard on each other and holding each other accountable, holding each other to higher standards compared to past years. I think that's super encouraging, and it has been really cool to see that transform over the course of four years here."

The Terriers will face reigning Patriot League runner-up Army West Point Wednesday as they play the first home game of their nine-game regular Patriot League season. They narrowly fell to Army West Point 17-15 last season.

"Army is a really great team, and it's going to be a really good opportunity for us to play them," attacker Hannah Tillier (CAS'25, Sargent'25) says. "I think that it'll be a fun game because we were really close with them last year-it was back and forth throughout the game, and we ended up only losing by two. So that stings a little bit, which I think makes the anticipation of this game more exciting, because we were so close last year, and we really want to get up this year."

Morton says that having faced ranked opponents BC and Brown in nonconference play earlier this season helped them prepare for the start of Patriot League play. "Our conference is so strong nationally, so I think it's important preparation for us, getting the best idea of where some of our weaknesses and challenges are," Morton says.

The Terriers will take on defending conference champion Loyola-Maryland on April 13.

Wednesday's matchup is the program's Pride Game, and it will be streamed as part of NESN and BU Athletics Fifty Forward, building toward the 50th anniversary of Title IX on June 23. The game will be streamed live via NESN and ESPN+.

"I think our sport has seen exponential growth over the last 5 to 10 years nationally," Morton says. "I think it's an awesome opportunity for young girls to turn on the television that afternoon and be able to watch, understand, and learn our sport as well as see the high-level lacrosse that's being played at the collegiate level right now."

Tillier hopes fans come out to cheer on the Terriers for all of this season's home games. "I think that there's a lot of people who are starting to really enjoy watching lacrosse-especially women's lacrosse-because it's fun, fast, and exciting to watch," she says. "It's also really nice as a student-athlete to have fans there. It makes it more exciting."

The Boston University women's lacrosse team will open home Patriot League play against Army West Point on Wednesday, March 27, at 4 pm on Nickerson Field. Admission is free for students with a Sports Pass, $5 for other members of the BU community, and $8 for general admission. The game will be streamed on NESN and ESPN+. All Patriot League games can be streamed live on ESPN+.
