Press Short-distance trains in the 3rd quarter of 2022: passengers up 53% year on year

Press release No. 471 of 10 November 2022

  • Passengers in short-distance rail transport travelled 87% more kilometres than in the 3rd quarter of 2021
  • Growth in tram transport were more moderate (+24%) for passengers

WIESBADEN- The number of passengers in public short-distance passenger transport markedly increased in the third quarter of 2022. This is shown by a provisional ad-hoc evaluation of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The evaluation was based on data from transport enterprises using automated passenger counting systems. The number of passengers travelling short distances by rail, including commuter trains, was up by 11% on the second quarter of 2022, and by 53% on the same quarter a year earlier. In the second quarter of 2022, the number of passengers had been up 46% quarter on quarter and 74% year on year. The increases were probably due to the 9-euro ticket that was valid from 1 June to 31 August and the easing of Covid restrictions.
