National LGBTQ Task Force commemorates Juneteenth

Washington, DC, June 19, 2017-The National LGBTQ Task Force is issuing the following statement on Juneteenth, the oldest national commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

'As we commemorate Juneteenth, it is with the sobering knowledge that the promise of full lived freedom, justice, equality and equity for Black people remains unfulfilled. Whether it is the southern states' use of voter suppression tactics and gerrymandered districts or the too frequent acquittal of police officers whose guns were used to kill black people, there is too little accountability. As a black woman who is also bisexual, I'm painfully aware of how anti-LGBTQ bias factors in as well,' said Stacey Long Simmons, Director, Advocacy and Action.
