At the Zapad-2021 exercise, the WMD air defence servicemen successfully repelled a massive missile and air strike by a mock enemy

Units of the radio engineering troops of the Western Military District (WMD) during the joint strategic exercise Zapad-2021 were put on alert eight times to detect and escort air targets.

In total, as part of the implementation of training tasks to cover positional areas and to repel massive missile and air strikes, more than 60 air targets were detected, classified as aircraft of a mock enemy.

At the command posts of aviation control, combat crews worked out the guidance of the crews of MiG-31 and Su-35 fighters to air targets. Electronic launches of anti-aircraft missiles and guided missile aircraft weapons were used on the conditional violating aircraft.

Crews of radar complexes and stations involved in the JSE Zapad-2021 are on round-the-clock combat duty for air defence.

The JSE of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus takes place every two years in accordance with the decision taken by the heads of the two states.

The Zapad-2021 exercise is the final stage of joint training of the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation this year.

Practical actions of the troops (forces) will be held in the period from September 10 to 16 at nine training grounds located on the territory of the Russian Federation, in the Baltic Sea, as well as at five training grounds of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus.

In total, up to 200 thousand military personnel will take part in the JSE Zapad-2021 on the territory of Russia and Belarus, about 80 aircraft and helicopters, up to 760 units of military equipment, including 290 tanks, 240 guns, multiple rocket launchers and mortars, as well as up to 15 ships will be involved.

The maximum number of personnel involved in the exercise of military units subject to the Vienna Document of 2011 on Confidence-and Security-building measures on the territory of the Russian Federation will not exceed 6.4 thousand military personnel.

The return of the military authorities and troops to the points of permanent deployment after participating in the exercise is planned until mid-October.
