Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal João Gomes Cravinho, in the context of his participation, as a special guest, in the 2022 Reunion of the Romanian Diplomacy in Bucharest.

The two officials appreciated the quality of the bilateral relationship. They reviewed the status of the initiatives regarding the consolidation of sectoral cooperation agreed upon during the visit of the Portuguese Prime Minister this spring.

The dynamic Romanian-Portuguese cooperation in the field of defence was highlighted, with Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă voicing special appreciation for the Portuguese military presence on the Romanian territory and the active contribution to strengthening the allied defence and deterrence posture on the Eastern Flank. In this context, the Romanian side voiced interest in extending the Portuguese military presence in Romania.

The exchange of views also focused on energy cost management measures and the regional security agenda in the context of the war in Ukraine, with the similarity of parties' assessments, noticed on this occasion.

At the same time, Prime Minister Ciucă emphasized the importance of the full implementation of the decisions taken at the NATO Summit in Madrid, in the sense of strengthening the allied posture on the Eastern Flank, and took note appreciatively of the active support offered by Portugal for the objective of Romania's accession to the Schengen area.
