Fatal Hit-and-Run Leaves Pedestrian Dead NR22232ah

Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department, Central Traffic Detectives, are investigating a fatal hit-and-run traffic collision that killed Eduardo Trujillo.

On July 28, 2022, around 1:30 a.m., witnesses saw Eduardo Trujillo laid down on the ground at Vernon Avenue and Towne Avenue. As the witnesses attempted to get Trujillo off the street, a dark pick-up truck ran over Trujillo. The driver of the truck did not stop to render aid and identify him or herself. Moments later, a second vehicle ran over Trujillo, and the second driver did stop to render aid. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced Trujillo deceased.

It was originally reported that there were two possible gunshot wounds discovered on Trujillo's body and the investigation was treated as a possible homicide. On August 2, 2022, the Los Angeles Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy on Trujillo's body. The examination concluded that the two holes on Trujillo's body were neither gunshot wounds nor stab wounds. The examination could not conclude how the wounds were caused. The Coroner's Office reclassified the death from "Homicide" to "Accidental."

Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves. The public is also reminded that as pedestrians, they should exercise caution when crossing streets, obey traffic lights, cross within marked crosswalks, and obey the rules of the road.

On April 15, 2015, the City Council amended the Los Angeles Administrative Code and created a Hit-and-Run Reward Program Trust Fund. A reward of up to $50,000 is available to community members that provide information leading to the offender's identification, apprehension, and conviction or resolution through a civil compromise.
