U.S. Rep. Lawrence Votes in Favor of the Bipartisan Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act

Washington, DC- Today, U.S. Representative Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14) voted in favor of H.R. 2119, the Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act of 2021. The Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA) was the first federal law to provide resources for survivors of domestic violence. Almost 40 years later, FVPSA is still the primary source of federal funding for domestic violence shelters in the country. The Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act of 2021 is a comprehensive reauthorization of this critical law that enhances and refocuses federal investment to address and prevent family and domestic violence.

"Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we've seen an alarming spike in cases of family and domestic violence. The pandemic has shed light on this ugly issue that has gone unaddressed for far too long," said Rep. Lawrence. "By passing this life-saving bipartisan legislation, we are ensuring that every survivor gets the resources and support they need. This is a matter of life and death, and I am thankful that the House is setting the standard"

The Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act:

• Shifts investments to increase prevention efforts, therefore reducing the rate of intimate partner violence and decreasing the funding needs for support services;
• Increases dedicated resources for over-represented and underserved populations, including communities of color, Tribal communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities; and
• Ensures survivors can receive culturally appropriate, accessible services.
