SPRINGFIELD, MA-Today, Ways and Means Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement applauding the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) creation of the Office of Climate Change and Health Equity:

'The creation of the Office of Climate Change and Health Equity at HHS reflects the agency's unique position to take a leading role in the fight against climate change and its effects on our nation's health. Now is the time to focus on making our health infrastructure more efficient and resilient, and I am confident that this office will lead consequential change that extends far beyond the health industry. As Congress crafts major infrastructure policy, the Ways and Means Committee is committed to tackling the climate crisis through the lens of equity and justice, and I am grateful to have President Biden, Secretary Becerra, and the entire Administration as partners in this work. Together, we will drive the meaningful change necessary to deliver better health outcomes and promote sustainability.'

Under Chairman Neal's leadership, the Ways and Means Racial Equity Initiative has been guiding the Committee's work in understanding and addressing discrimination in federal policy, and earlier this year, Neal called on HHS to lead the health care industry in combatting climate change.
