Road Construction Updates

As the city of Aurora improves its infrastructure offerings to its current and future residents, demands for more infrastructure, improvements and repairs also grow. On any given work day, there can be as many as 150 active work zones within the city.

Traffic engineering staff do make an effort to minimize the impact of these work zones to the traveling public. In addition to reviewing and approving the plans to ensure they are safe and compliant with all regulations, staff also work with contractors to seek alternatives to street closures and minimize the number of lane closures and their duration. Staff also try to keep conflicting work zones from overlapping in time or space. In most cases, these efforts are successful. However, on occasion, alternatives are not available and since we are dealing with the outdoor environment, even the best planned projects get delayed by weather, special events or unknown conditions, resulting in confusion and/or unplanned congestion.

Please be patient, slow down and respect the workers and equipment required to maintain well-functioning infrastructure in the city.

Other Road Construction Work

Northbound Chambers Road closures
Starting May 9, northbound Chambers Road will be fully closed for three weeks between 17th Avenue and Montview Boulevard while Xcel Energy maintains a gas line. As a result northbound Chambers Road from Colfax Avenue to Montview Boulevard will be closed to through traffic for the same time frame. Follow the signed detour east to Airport Boulevard. Expect delays and use alternate routes.

South Aurora Parkway between Alexander and Orchard
Multiple lanes will be closed in both directions between May 6 and 20 on South Aurora Parkway between Alexander Drive and Orchard Road for CenturyLink to conduct work. Expect delays; alternate routes are advised.

23rd Avenue between Paris and Peoria
From May 9 to 13, 23rd Avenue between Paris and Peoria streets will be fully closed for upgrades to curb ramps and the concrete crosspan at the intersection with Peoria. Detours will be in place; alternate routes are suggested.

26th Avenue closure
26th Avenue between Powhaton Road and Picadilly Road will be closed beginning May 20 for four weeks for work on the infrastructure east of E-470. A signed detour will be south to Smith Road. Alternate routes are suggested.

East Exposition Avenue at Peoria Street
Starting March 24 until late May, East Exposition Avenue at Peoria Street will close around the clock and Peoria will be down to two lanes between East Exposition Drive and East Kepner Place. Please consider South Troy or South Moline streets as alternate routes until the work has concluded.

Third Avenue closures
Third Avenue between Powhaton Road and Newcastle Way will be closed until spring weather allows for a top matt of asphalt to be laid down. Following the opening of the Third Avenue and Powhaton Road closure, Sixth Avenue between Powhaton Road and Newcastle Way will be closed for about three weeks. Detour via Third Avenue

Alameda and Peoria closures
The left lane of westbound Alameda Avenue and the eastbound left turn lane onto Peoria Street are closed. Northbound Peoria Street is a single right lane at East Nevada and left turns from southbound Peoria onto eastbound Alameda are prohibited. Alternate routes are suggested for the next 30 days.

Major Road Projects in East Aurora
Significant work is underway in several areas to improve mobility on the east side of Aurora. Visit this story map to learn more (updated July 16, 2021).

CDOT Road Construction Updates

Ramp meter signals

Beginning Monday, Feb. 28, CDOT will activate new ramp meter signals on the southbound I-225, eastbound C-470 and the westbound E-470 on-ramps to northbound I-25. This is part of the Smart 25 Pilot Project to test a new ramp metering system with the goal of reducing congestion and improving travel times on northbound I-25 between Ridgegate Parkway and University Boulevard.

The new ramp metering system was activated on 18 on-ramps along this stretch of interstate last fall, with the activation of the new ramp meters on I-225, C-470 and E-470 coming on line Monday.

What motorists need to know:
• Four ramp metering signals will be activated starting 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at the end of each of the I-225 and C-470 on-ramps to northbound I-25. Two new ramp meters will also activate on the westbound E-470 on-ramp to northbound I-25.
• When the ramp meter lights are activated, flashing signs will warn motorists to slow down and be prepared to stop.
• Motorists can use the left and right shoulder lanes on the I-225 and C-470 on-ramps when the ramp metering system is activated.
• The ramp meters will be gradually activated starting at 3 p.m. through the evening rush-hour, depending on traffic conditions.
• Traffic will be closely monitored and the ramp meters will be adjusted as needed.
• The testing period will last through late spring/summer. If results show traffic conditions improve, permanent deployment is possible.

Background:
The project has installed vehicle detection devices in and along on-ramps on northbound I-25 from Ridgegate Parkway to University Boulevard. Sensors measure the number of vehicles, their speed, and the length of the line of vehicles waiting to enter the highway. Sensors also measure the volume of traffic on I-25. This information feeds into an algorithm that operates the system and the timing of the lights to reduce stop-and-go traffic. This system has worked successfully in Melbourne, Australia. Traffic flow increased by 25% and speeds improved 35% to 60% during peak travel times, the equivalent of adding a lane at the fraction of the cost.

Changes coming to I-70: Improvements recommended at I-70/Airpark and I-70/Watkins interchanges

The area in Arapahoe and Adams counties surrounding the interchanges at I-70/Airpark and I-70/Watkins Road is planned for substantial new development. Arapahoe County is leading a study to proactively identify recommended improvements at each interchange to meet future travel demands.

Following detailed forecasting of future traffic volumes and patterns, interchange design alternatives were developed and evaluated. The study is now nearly complete, and recommendations were presented at an Aug. 25 virtual public meeting (visit the project webpage to replay the meeting). Improvements at each interchange would likely be constructed in phases to provide adequate traffic operations as the area continues to grow.

Improvements recommended by this initial study will next need to be evaluated in a formal environmental clearance process before final design and construction can begin. Timing of construction is uncertain since funding for these next steps has not yet been identified. Current projections of area development show initial phases of improvements could be necessary before 2025. Arapahoe County is actively working with local partners to create a funding plan.

State Highway 83 (Parker Road) Concrete Panel Replacement
The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor Ralph L. Wadsworth are conducting work to improve several sections of roadway along Parker Road (State Highway 83) from E-470 to Arapahoe Road. This includes removal and replacement of damaged concrete panels, ADA curb ramp improvements, guardrail improvements, and joint sealing to minimize the effects of surface water infiltration.
