U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years old and live in District 4-which includes areas of downtown and central Berkeley-have until 8pm on May 28 to register and vote for their new City Councilmember.

Take the steps below to get started:

Vote by the 8pm May 28 deadline by submitting your ballot in one of three ways:

  • Postmark by U.S. mail
  • Deliver to one of two ballot drop boxes in Berkeley, open 24/7 until 8pm on May 28
  • Starting May 18, visit the special election vote center - a site where adult U.S. citizens living in the district can both register and vote until the deadline.

Registering and voting is simple. You can help choose your next representative to the nine-member City Council.

Vote by mail, drop box, or in person

Eligible voters in District 4 can vote by mail, drop box, or at a vote center.

To return your ballot by mail, postmark it by May 28. The return envelope is postage paid, so you do not need to add postage to mail your return envelope. Remember to sign the back of your return envelope to ensure your vote will be counted.

You can also return your ballot at one of two drop boxes:

Official candidate information and results

In this District 4 special election, voters will elect their new representative on the Berkeley City Council to serve until November 2026. This will complete the term of Councilmember Kate Harrison, who resigned in February 2024.

Visit the City's elections page for official information, including candidate statements and campaign finance reports. The Council race uses "ranked choice voting," which allows voters to mark their first through fifth choice candidates in order of preference and avoids a runoff election.

Election results will be published on the Alameda County Registrar of Voters website after polls close on May 28. Keep in mind that it will take some time for all ballots to be counted, possibly changing outcomes from election night until a final tally is determined.

If you're a U.S. citizen who lives in the downtown and surrounding areas, you have until 8pm on May 28 to elect your next representative to the City Council.

District residents who've registered by May 13 will receive a mail ballot and a postage-paid return envelope, which they can submit via mail, a drop box or the vote center - a site where eligible voters can both register and vote until the deadline.
