Strong Second Half Lifts Cougars Over Golden Wolves In Season Finale, 49-28

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 16, 2019) - Misericordia University (5-4, 5-3) outscored Alvernia University (2-8, 1-7) 28-7 in the second half en route to a 49-28 win in the season finale on Saturday at Alvernia.

Alvernia took the opening possession and put together a 19 play, seven minute, 91 yard drive that culminated with Darius Sample connecting with on a 10 yard touchdown reception to put Alvernia up 7-0.

Misericordia's Michael Gawlik broke free for a 28 yard touchdown run on the following drive to tie it up a 7-7.

The Golden Wolves took their next drive down into the Red Zone, but their drive stalled on the Misericordia 16, where Alvernia's attempted a field goal. The Cougars blocked the attempt, and recovered it at their own 36 yard line.

Misericordia took the ensuing drive down the field and capped it off with a 1-yard run by Gawlik to go up 14-7.

Alvernia responded on its following drive. On 2nd and 5 at the Misericordia 24 yard line, broke out of a 23 yard run and was tackled just shy of the goal line. Carey finished off the job on the next play with a 1-yard touchdown run to tie it up at 14-14.

The Cougars again responded to Alvernia's scoring drive with one of their own. Facing a 4th and 5 on Alvernia's 22, Misericordia's Brady Williams found Isaiah Williams for a 22 yard touchdown reception to put Misericordia up 21-14.

Alvernia used its ground game to tie it up at 21-21 on its next possession. The Golden Wolves kept the ball on the ground for all eight plays of the drive, and Sample finished the drive off with a 3 yard touchdown run.

As Misericorida was driving down the field with the first half winding down, came up with an interception on the Alvernia 18 yard line to keep it at 21-21 going into the break.

The Cougars wasted no time coming out of the half, scoring on the first play of the second half. After a solid kick return put the Cougars on their own 40, Brady Williams found Sam Gillison for a 6 yard touchdown reception.

The teams traded possessions until Misericordia put together a 96 yard scoring drive that was capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run from Gawlik to go up 35-21.

Alvernia got back within a score on the following drive, with Carey taking a 12 yard into the endzone with 3:07 left in the third quarter.

The Cougars scored twice more in the fourth quarter while keeping Alvernia out of the endzone in the final 15 minutes to take the 49-28 win.

With their win, Miericordia will be the #3 seed in the MAC - Centennial Bowl Series.

The Golden Wolves finished the afternoon with 319 rushing yards, 222 of which came in the first half. Carey accounted for 156 of the rushing yards, and Sample finished with 129 yards on the ground. Sample added 96 yards in the air, and was 15-for-24 behind center.

Carey also finished with four receptions for 19 yards, and brought in three passes for 20 yards.

led Alvernia's defense with nine tackles. Senior finished with six tackles in his final collegiate game.

was a perfect 4-for-4 on extra point attempts.

Alvernia finishes their second season with a 2-8 overall record, and a 1-7 MAC record.

Carey became a 1,000 yard rusher on the season with his 156 rushing yards today. Sample finished his 2019 campaign with 1,949 all-purpose yards. Sample rushed for 908 yards and added 1,041 yards in the air.
