Distance is no barrier to a good deed for Sydney's homeless. Halfway across the Pacific, the crew of HMAS Adelaide did good for the Sydney based Matthew Talbot Hostel, the ship's charity of choice.
Leading Seaman Boatswains Mate Zachery 'Ned' Kelly generously pledged to shave his luscious beard for this worthwhile charity, setting his shipmates a target of $1500 to grace them with his boyish clean-shaven new look.
Living up to its motto, Adelaide rose to the challenge and was 'united for the common good' in beating the target with $1733 pledged.
So on the 10th August, while the ship was at sea, Adelaide ship's company and embarked forces gathered to see the shaving of one of the finest beards onboard.
Fed by the sumptuous fare of the 2017 Silver Platter winning catering team, and to the tunes of the RAN Band, the ship cheered as the highest bidder, AB Ayla-Crystal Peacock 'de-bearded the lion' while ably supported by the ship's unofficial barber AB Gary Walker.
'I was talking with my mates on the quarterdeck one day, and what started off as a joke took on a life of its own. After such a long time away from home, I thought the beard shaving would be great for my mates' morale, while raising money for a worthy cause', said LS Kelly.
'Knowing how much Matthew Talbot Hostel means to 'Ned' made me proud to donate the money for a good cause,' said AB Peacock who posted the winning pledge of $250.
'They do so much for our homeless, including some veterans who have sadly been left behind.
'It amazes me that Adelaide could unite for a common purpose and cheer 'Ned' on while getting shaved,' said AB Peacock.
The Matthew Talbot Hostel is a Sydney based charity located at 22 Talbot Place, Woolloomooloo, only a short distance from Adelaide's home port of Fleet Base East. It provides temporary shelter and specialised support to Sydney's homeless and at-risk community, while facilitating other essential services including more permanent housing.
