Former Puerto Rican U-20 Player Martinez-Velez Set to Join Lions

Mount St. Joseph University Men's soccer program would like to welcome Luis Angel Martinez Velez to our University and Men's soccer family!!!

Martinez Velez is the son of Mrs. Carmen R. Velez Colon and Mr. Luis D. Martinez Rivera and a graduate of Cupeyville High School in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Coach Argueta expressed his excitement in bringing someone like Luis to his program 'He (Luis) is a great addition to our program. He is a player that I saw at the Puerto Rico ID Camp a couple of years ago and it caught my attention. Not only for his skills, but even more from the way he responded to the coaches' instructions and feedback. Luis is not only a very good player, but he is a great person who is very respectful and goal oriented. He will be a great player and leader to this team.'

Martinez Velez brings a high caliber of experience to the program, 'Luis brings a higher caliber of experience that we have not had in the past. He was just recently a member of the Under 20 Puerto Rico Men's National Team, which competed in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers (Guatemala, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, USA, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, Bermuda and Barbados) as well as having been a member of the U17 Puerto Rico Men's National Team. He has already made history in our program as he is our first Puerto Rican player. 'He will be competing for a starting role in the Midfield', says Coach Argueta.

Luis hopes to make an impact on the team and in the classroom. He will be majoring in Sports Management. He hopes to someday go overseas and follow the coaching roads towards completing the FIFA/UEFA Coaching licenses as well as to work for a professional soccer club in a coaching or administrative role.
