2,000 CUNY Students to Participate in Paid Internships This Summer Aligned to Their Career Aspirations

Businesses, Nonprofits and Public Employers Can Still Sign up and Hire Students Free of Cost

CUNY Career Launch is Part of the City's Summer Employment Program for Youth

The City University of New York is launching a new internship program for students aged 18-24 years old this summer as part of Mayor Eric Adams' commitment to connect 100,000 youth to summer employment. CUNY Career Launch will pay 2,000 ambitious, bright and eager undergraduates to boost capacity and bring new ideas to companies, nonprofits and public sector employers across the five boroughs.

CUNY Career Launch is a critical component of CUNY's work to prepare and connect students to sustaining careers and offers employers the chance to take on talented CUNY students at no cost. Interns will work 19 hours per week over the course of six weeks between early July and mid-August, while earning $20 an hour. Students will work in fields related to their major and receive training before starting their internships.

"Over 80 percent of CUNY students stay in New York City after graduation, making an indelible mark on the life of the city we are proud to call home," said Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. "CUNY Career Launch will give businesses, organizations and government agencies the chance to hire their next generation of workers and - thanks to the generous financial support from both the Mayor and City Council - this will be absolutely free to employers."

The initiative will focus on specific sectors, including: health; public service/government; community organizations; science, technology and engineering (STEM); and green energy/climate resilience/environmental protection.

"CUNY students have an incredibly diverse set of experiences, backgrounds, skills and expertise. We created CUNY Career Launch to help employers find the talent that they need to grow and thrive this summer and then beyond," said University Associate Provost Lauren Andersen. "We believe that every small business and nonprofit organization, every government agency and international company in the City would benefit from hiring a CUNY staff member."

CUNY is currently welcoming new employer partners to apply to provide skilled internship experiences for college students. For more information, please visit the CUNY Career Launch website.

The City University of New York is the nation's largest urban public university, a transformative engine of social mobility that is a critical component of the lifeblood of New York City. Founded in 1847 as the nation's first free public institution of higher education, CUNY today has seven community colleges, 11 senior colleges and seven graduate or professional institutions spread across New York City's five boroughs, serving over 260,000 undergraduate and graduate students and awarding 55,000 degrees each year. CUNY's mix of quality and affordability propels almost six times as many low-income students into the middle class and beyond as all the Ivy League colleges combined. More than 80 percent of the University's graduates stay in New York, contributing to all aspects of the city's economic, civic and cultural life and diversifying the city's workforce in every sector. CUNY's graduates and faculty have received many prestigious honors, including 13 Nobel Prizes and 26 MacArthur "Genius" Grants. The University's historic mission continues to this day: provide a first-rate public education to all students, regardless of means or background.
