Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets’ call with the Foreign Minister of Georgia David Zalkaliani

Yesterday 23 February, Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets spoke with the Foreign Minister of Georgia David Zalkaliani. Liimets called to her Georgian counterpart to express her concern over the escalating political crisis in Georgia and to learn about the Georgian Government's view on the recent developments.

'I expressed my concerns regarding the ongoing events in Tbilisi,' said Foreign Minister Liimets. 'I also stressed the critical importance of respecting the rule of law and democratic processes, calling all sides to show restraint and continue holding dialogue.' The Foreign Minister of Georgia provided Minister Liimets with his view on the situation in the country.

Foreign Minister Liimets reaffirmed Estonia's unwavering support for Georgia's territorial integrity as well as for Georgia's ambitions of Euro-Atlantic integration. 'In my view, to solve the crisis in accordance with democratic principles, it is of utmost importance that Georgia continues to pursue the Euro-Atlantic path chosen by the people of Georgia.'

The political crisis in Georgia started after disputed parliamentary elections in October 2020. The situation deteriorated on the morning of 23 February when the opposition party United National Movement (UNM) leader Nika Melia was arrested at the party headquarters.
