Immigration update: Philippines | The Bureau of Immigration to allow departure of US citizens with expired passports

The Philippines Bureau of Immigration (BI) released an announcement to allow the departure of US citizens with certain expired passports.

Who will be affected?

American nationals residing in the Philippines.

Background
On June 24, 2021, the Bureau of Immigration released an announcement to allow the departure of US citizens with certain expired passports.

All BI personnel assigned in the different ports were advised to allow the departure of passengers whose US passport had expired from 01 January 2020. The Immigration Commissioner said that the use of said expired passports by departing US passengers will only be allowed until 31 December 2021.

Impact

1. American passport holders, whose passports have expired since 01 January 2020, are allowed to depart the Philippines until 31 December 2021.
2. The BI has been tasked to consider this information and continue with the process of all applications for updating of stay and emigration clearance certificates (ECC) of holders of expired US passports upon presentation of a confirmed ticket bound for the USA.
3. Alternatively, those who intend to stay in the Philippines, are still required to renew their passports with the US Embassy and apply for and/or renew their Philippine visas.

Implementation

Effective 24 June 2021.
