Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Access to Justice seeks volunteer members for new Consumer Debt Committee

4/17/2024

The Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Access to Justice (Commission) is seeking volunteer members to serve on its new Consumer Debt Committee. The expected term of service is three years. We are specifically seeking applications from candidates from the following court stakeholder groups:

  1. Legal aid attorneys;
  2. Private consumer attorneys;
  3. Creditor attorneys; and
  4. Court clerk, law librarian, or other court staff.

The Illinois Supreme Court established the Commission in 2012 to assist vulnerable court users, including self-represented litigants, limited English proficient litigants, and litigants with disabilities in accessing and navigating our courts. The new Consumer Debt Committee will have 10-12 members and is charged with considering ways to increase access to justice in consumer debt cases and making recommendations to the Commission.

To be eligible for service on the Consumer Debt Committee, the following qualifications are desirable:

  • A dedication to increasing access to the court system for self-represent litigants, limited English proficient litigants, litigants with a disability, and historically marginalized communities.
  • Knowledge of Illinois consumer debt law, practices, court processes, and procedures.
  • Commitment to attending periodic Consumer Debt Committee meetings and actively participating in the Committee. It is anticipated that most Committee meetings will take place via Zoom.
