2021/04/20Premier stresses basic healthcare, compulsory education in Sichuan

Premier Li Keqiang visited Shahe township, Chaotian district in Guangyuan, Southwest China's Sichuan province, on April 19, 2021.

The Premier inquired about basic healthcare and compulsory education, which are top concerns for people's well-being.

While visiting the township health center in Shahe, Premier Li asked patients about their reimbursement proportion for drug expenses and medical insurance payments. He also inspected the pharmacy, and emphasized no profit margins should be allowed.

Boasting 10 general practitioners and 9 domestic medical teams, the health center provides basic healthcare services for over 20,000 people in the area.

Premier Li fully affirmed their contributions, and said the medical staff built an initial line of defense for people's life and health at the grassroots level. That has eased people's burdens, with minor illnesses cured in a timely fashion.

More funds will be allocated to basic healthcare services, especially hospitals and health centers at the township and county levels. Better welfare for medical workers will be provided to let them work more comfortably and take good care of people's health.

During a visit to Shahe township primary school, Premier Li learned in detail about school conditions, curriculums, teachers' salaries, and other issues.

'As your school is surrounded by mountains, I hope you study hard and stand higher, and then the mountains will no longer stand in your way,' the Premier said to the pupils. 'After you leave here in the future, you cannot forget your teachers here, however successful you become.'

He also said to the teachers the government will continue to allocate funds to compulsory education, particularly those at the township and county levels. Rural teachers will see a gradual improvement in their salaries and social welfare, and their average salary should not be lower than that of local civil servants.
